A plain, step-by-step guide to buying a whisky cask on The Whisky Index, written for anyone who hasn't done this before. Every step below is the real process, not a simplified version of it.
Every cask listed here has already been through our verification checks before it ever reaches the marketplace, so what you see is real: the distillery, the cask type, the fill date, and a confidence-rated price estimate based on actual comparable sales.
Found one you want? Click Buy Now to purchase it at the listed asking price. There's no negotiation and no offer to make: the price you see is the price you pay, and it never changes after you click. The cask is reserved for you immediately and taken off the market while your purchase goes through.
Before you can pay, we need to confirm who you are and that you're old enough to buy alcohol under the law that applies to you. This is a one-off check through Stripe, our identity verification provider, and takes a couple of minutes with a passport or driving licence.
Before paying, you'll confirm you've read and agree to the Cask Sale Agreement — the real terms this specific sale is made under. You then pay the full price, with nothing added at checkout. Your payment is held securely until the cask has actually changed hands at the warehouse, not released the moment you click pay.
The same day, our supplier issues the delivery order and we pass it to the warehouse currently holding your cask. The warehouse confirms the transfer into your name — this is the step that actually matters: it's what turns your purchase into real, warehouse-recorded ownership, not just a database entry on our side.
Once the warehouse confirms the transfer, we email you an ownership confirmation and your dashboard shows a certificate: the distillery, the cask number, the fill date, and the transfer date, all in one place you can access any time.
After your ownership is confirmed, we move your cask to Campbeltown Bond at our own cost, in your name — skipped if it's already there. Campbeltown Bond will set up your own direct account for your cask, so you can see and manage it directly.
Casks priced over £8,000 include 3 years of storage and insurance at Campbeltown Bond, from the date ownership transfers to you. After that — or for casks at £8,000 or under, from the start — Campbeltown Bond charges its standard rates directly to you, which we confirm before you buy. Either way, we move your cask to Campbeltown Bond at our own cost. Other warehouse services, such as regauging or sampling, aren't included.
The cask stays at the bonded warehouse under your name; you don't take physical delivery of a whole cask. From here you can check its estimated value on your dashboard, get an independent second opinion before making any decision, or list it for sale yourself whenever you choose. Nothing here is a promise of what it'll be worth or how easily it'll sell: value can fall as well as rise, and we don't guarantee a buyer will be found.

This is a made-up example to show how the steps and numbers fit together. It isn't a real cask, and nothing in it should be searched for or relied on as a real listing.
Let's imagine a cask listed as Example Distillery, Cask #SAMPLE-001, ex-bourbon, filled 14 March 2015, currently around 61.2% ABV, held at a bonded warehouse in Speyside. The listing shows a confidence-rated estimate of £4,200, based on recent comparable sales of similar age-and-cask-type whisky.
Priya finds it and clicks Buy Now at the listed £4,200. There's nothing to negotiate: the cask is reserved for her immediately.
Priya hasn't bought through The Whisky Index before, so she's prompted to verify her identity: a quick passport scan and a selfie, taking about two minutes. She ticks that she's read the Cask Sale Agreement, then pays £4,200 through a secure checkout. That money is held, not paid out yet.
Three working days later, the warehouse in Speyside confirms the cask has been formally transferred into Priya's name. She gets an ownership confirmation email, and her dashboard now shows a certificate: Example Distillery, Cask #SAMPLE-001, owned by Priya, transferred on that date. Because £4,200 is at or under the £8,000 threshold, storage and insurance aren't included — Campbeltown Bond will charge Priya its standard rates directly, which were confirmed to her before she bought.
Since her cask wasn't already at Campbeltown Bond, we move it there at our own cost, in her name. Campbeltown Bond will set up your own direct account for your cask, so you can see and manage it directly. She doesn't collect the cask — it stays at the warehouse, maturing. In a few years she might get it revalued, get a second opinion before deciding what to do, or list it for sale herself. What it'll actually be worth by then isn't something anyone can promise her.
