Yes. The price on a cask's record is the full price — nothing is added at checkout.
Card payments up to £5,000. Above £5,000, you pay by bank transfer.
We sell as principal: each cask is sourced from our supplier at the point of sale, and the contract of sale is with us directly, not an introduction to a third party.
You pay in full at purchase, and that's also when our contract for the sale is formed. Once your payment clears, we secure your cask within 1 working day and register you as its owner at the warehouse. We aim to register your cask within 7 days of payment. If you cancel, we refund you within 14 days. Once registered, that's the moment your ownership becomes legally complete. Afterwards, we move your cask to Castlelaw at our own cost and risk, in your name (skipped if it's already there), where Castlelaw will set up your own direct account for your cask, so you can see and manage it directly. These are the same steps shown on every cask's own record page.
Once the warehouse holding your cask confirms the transfer into your name — "registered" — your purchase is recorded against the cask's ownership history with us, and the warehouse's own records show you as the owner. That's a separate, later event from payment, which is captured in full at purchase. Moving your cask to Castlelaw afterwards is a separate step again, and doesn't affect when your ownership became legally complete.
Once your cask transfer is confirmed, Castlelaw will set up your own direct account for your cask, so you can see and manage it directly.
Every cask includes 3 years' storage at Castlelaw, from the date you're registered as the owner. Insurance: arranged separately. Castlelaw's cover terms are being renewed. From year 4 you contract with Castlelaw directly, at Castlelaw's current rates, from about £37 to £187 a year including VAT, depending on cask size and storage, and we'll remind you beforehand. We are not VAT registered. Casks are sold in bond, so no VAT or duty is due unless the whisky is removed from bond. Either way, we move your cask to Castlelaw at our own cost. Other warehouse services, such as regauging, sampling, or moving the cask again later, aren't included.
Some UK owners ask about this. HMRC treats certain items with a predictable life of 50 years or less as 'wasting assets', which can be exempt from capital gains tax. Whether that applies to a whisky cask depends on the facts, and buying and selling frequently may be treated as trading instead. This is a UK tax point. We don't give tax advice, so please speak to a tax adviser.
Where we show it, price context is our own comparison of a cask's value today, based on comparable evidence, labelled with how much evidence actually backs it. It sits next to the cask's real asking price — never in place of it. It is not a guarantee of sale price, future value, buyer demand, or that a transaction will complete — no financial return, appreciation, liquidity or resale outcome is promised by anything on this site.
Every buyer, wherever you're buying from, has a real 14-day right to cancel your purchase after the warehouse confirms the transfer, for a full refund in the currency you paid.
You'll verify your identity and age before paying. The minimum purchase age depends on your country — 18 in the UK, but genuinely different in some other jurisdictions — and is checked at the point of purchase, not assumed in advance.
Yes, and there are a few real routes: sell to another private buyer (you find the buyer and set the price), sell to the trade (bottlers, brokers or our own supplier — usually a lower, trade price), a specialist auction house, or have it bottled. See selling your cask later for the honest detail on each. We can't promise a buyer, a price or a return, and we don't buy casks back ourselves.
Whisky casks are illiquid and their value can fall as well as rise. Price context shown on this platform is a comparison based on available data, not a guarantee of price, resale timing, buyer demand, or future performance. Nobody, including us, can tell you which cask will rise in value. Each fact on a cask's own record carries its own evidence state — see how records work — and none of it is a warranty of authenticity, condition, or value beyond what was actually checked. This is not financial advice.
