Payments
How payment actually works when you buy or sell on The Index. It depends on who the seller is.
Who do I actually pay?
For almost every listing, you pay the seller directly, through the seller’s own checkout; we never receive, hold, or process that payment. The one exception is an asset The Index itself owns and lists directly; for those, you pay us, in the usual way.
How do I know which kind of listing I’m looking at?
Every listing shows who the legal seller is: look for "Sold by [name], not The Index" on the listing and its certificate page.
If I’m buying The Index’s own inventory, how does payment work?
Your card is authorised but not captured: the funds are held, not released, until BOTH the seller confirms handover and the buyer confirms receipt. Only then is payment actually captured.
What if there’s a problem with a third-party payment: a refund, a dispute, non-payment?
That’s between you and the seller, and their own payment provider; we have no ability to move or refund money we never held. See our Complaints page for what we can and can’t help with.
